QUA’s Q-SEP ultrafiltration changes the economics of wastewater treatment for commercial buildings

The client, a commercial business park, offers office space and a wide range of world-class conveniences and value-added amenities – both work and leisure related.

The client had been facing product water quality issues in terms of high turbidity and odor in their STP. The STP water was being used for gardening and floor washing activities. Being a business and commercial hub, this was not acceptable and the end-user decided to go in for Ultrafiltration as an additional filtration step to resolve the turbidity and odor issues.

Since high turbidity was anticipated due to inconsistent STP treated water quality, the client decided to go in for PVDF based outside-in UF membranes, and evaluated various manufacturers’ membrane options. The evaluation criteria were based on the membrane surface area, the ability to withstand higher feed water turbidity and amount of waste generation. The client finally selected Q-SEP 8012 modules due to the following advantages offered:

  • High membrane area of 80 m2, requiring lesser number of modules which results in capex saving for the end-user.
  • Its ability to withstand feed turbidity up to 100 NTU on a continuous basis.
  • Regular backwash not required, resulting in less waste generation.

QUA has supplied 10 Q-SEP® 8012 modules which are installed after the tertiary treatment as a final polisher. The performance of these PVDF membranes on the tertiary treated sewage has been very encouraging. The ultrafiltration system was commissioned in November 2019, and has been running successfully since then. Seeing the results, the client then installed the Q-SEP UF system in two other of their business parks.

The product water turbidity has been consistently less than 0.1 NTU. The permeate flow of the UF system has been consistently maintained at 35m3/hr. on a day to day basis, without any loss in gross output.

The Q-SEP® outside-in hollow fiber ultrafiltration modules contain polyvinylidene fluoride PVDF membranes manufactured by QUA’s innovative modified thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) method. The membrane has high mechanical strength, high chemical and chlorine tolerance, and ability to handle high feed turbidity with wide range of application.
