Aquatech, a global leader in water and wastewater technologies for the industrial & infrastructure markets, announces the commissioning and completion of one year of operation of its wastewater treatment project for Mumbai International Airport Pvt. Ltd. (MIAL) The facility is located at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport (CSIA) – the gateway to Mumbai, India’s financial capital and its most populous city – catering to the new international terminal 2.

Aquatech had been awarded an EPC contract to supply on a complete turnkey basis a 10 million liters per day sewage treatment system and 4 million liters per day recycle system for the new airport terminal. The company successfully completed installation and commissioning in 2014, and handed over the wastewater treatment plant to the client in early 2015. The sewage treatment plant has been in operation for more than a year. The site is fully operational in auto mode. In addition, the product water quality exceeds the design limits and is being used for HVAC make up.

“The MIAL project is an important milestone for Aquatech in further consolidating our market leadership position in the country’s rapidly growing wastewater treatment and recycle market for infrastructure as well as industrial sectors,” said Mr. Amit Sharma, VP – Eastern Industrial Solutions, Aquatech, who noted that Aquatech has been awarded a comprehensive operation and maintenance contract for the plant.

The project integrates a combination of advanced treatment technologies, including a Sequencing Batch Reactor (SBR), QUA™ Q-SEP® ultrafiltration, and reverse osmosis processes. SBR is a biological treatment process that incorporates a high level of process sophistication in a configuration that is cost and space effective.

In addition to use of innovative technologies, the project required ingenuity in the design of the facility because of the rigid and unusual space constraints. The plant is situated on a small triangular plot completely surrounded by utility buildings and an adjacent river, thus posing significant design and engineering challenges. To solve this problem, Aquatech’s engineering team devised a circular design to fit the two SBR basins into the triangular plot and opted to configure the plant vertically.

“This solution not only overcame space and size constraints, but also provided an economical solution for the client. The extraordinary design and efficient and effortless operation of the plant have made it an outstanding example of technological and engineering advancement,” said Mr. Sharma.
